Best Powder Measure Must-Have Features

Versatility

When we talk about versatility, we’re referring to a powder measure’s ability to adapt, improvise, and conquer a variety of powder types and loads. You want a piece of equipment that can handle anything you throw at it, from the finest powders to the coarsest granules.

Versatility in a powder measure ensures you’re not limited in your reloading operations, allowing you to experiment with different loads and ultimately, find your perfect blend.

Durability

Reloading ammos

There’s something to be said about a tool that stands the test of time. Durable powder measures are built like tanks, engineered to withstand not just the passage of time, but also the rigors and demands of repeated use.

Durability translates to a sound investment, offering a blend of reliability, longevity, and trust that your tool won’t give up on you mid-operation. The perfect powder measure is one that’s constructed from robust, high-quality materials, and designed to be your loyal companion through countless reloading sessions.

Accuracy

measuring ammos with a caliper

In the world of reloading, accuracy isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity. A powder measure’s chief responsibility is to deliver the exact same amount of powder, each and every time. There’s no room for guesswork or approximation.

Every granule matters. The right powder measure ensures consistency in your powder charges, maintaining uniformity, and providing the accuracy you need for safe, reliable ammunition.

The ultimate powder measure is akin to a seasoned conductor, ensuring every note (or in this case, grain) is in perfect harmony, each and every time.

Ease of Use

Reloading Ammo in a reloading press

Even the most precise and versatile tool can be a headache if it’s overly complicated or laborious to use. User-friendly features that streamline the setup, loading, and reloading process can transform a tedious task into a smooth, enjoyable operation.

The ideal powder measure combines simplicity with efficiency, like a well-oiled machine, requiring minimal effort on your part. It should be easy to adjust, clean, and maintain, making your reloading process as seamless as possible.

Our Top 7 Best Powder Measures for Reloading

Whether you’re dealing with small or large loads, coarse or fine powders, the Hornady Lock N Load is up to the task. It’s a hardy piece of equipment, built to withstand repeated use, but where it really stands out is in its user-friendly design.

Hornady Lock-N-Load Powder Measure Details

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Highly adaptable to different loads and powders
  • Quick and easy to adjust
  • Great value for money

Cons

  • It might take some practice to master
  • Plastic components may not be as durable as metal ones

Scores: 4.6/5

What customers say

“I started reloading again after not doing so for a while. While the cost of components has skyrocketed, it is still less expensive than purchasing factory ammo, and even more important, you can get ammunition that is not available anywhere (if you have or can find the components).

I found that the small Lee measure would not throw large enough charges for some rifle loads, and even throwing half charge loads it was not accurate. I bought the Hornady, for the value and because they are a quality manufacturer. I was not disappointed. So far I have loaded ball powder and the measure has operated flawlessly. The mounting system is a little hokey-doke, but it works. I will eventually purchase their mounting stand. A little more elegant solution. I would recommend this measure, it operates smoothly and is precise.”

Best for Small Charges: RCBS Uniflow Powder Measure

If you’re frequently dealing with small charges, then the RCBS Uniflow is your knight in shining armor. This powder measure is like a master chef – it meticulously measures your ingredients, delivering a consistent blend every time. The accuracy it offers, particularly with small charges, is commendable. It’s like a sniper, hitting the target every time. While adjusting for larger charges might demand a little patience, and cleaning might seem like a chore, the consistency and accuracy it offers with small charges make it a must-have tool for those who favor precision over speed.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Superb accuracy for small charges
  • Durable, robust construction
  • Very consistent powder throws

Cons

  • Adjusting for large charges can be time-consuming
  • May be tricky to clean

Scores: 4.4/5

What customers say

“I use this on my Dillon 750 progressive with the case activated linkage kit and it’s so far superior to the Dillon powder drop system it isn’t funny. Do not waste your time with the Dillon powder drop and get the RCBS instead. Will it throw big stick powders like Varget? Likely not but I have a Lee powder drop for that since it uses a rubber wipe.”

– Ape Factory

Best for Ease of Use: Lyman – Gen6 Compact Touch Screen Powder System

The Lyman Gen6 Compact is like the iPhone of powder measures – sleek, sophisticated, and impressively user-friendly. With its touchscreen control, it revolutionizes the reloading process, making it as simple as sending a text message.

Its compact design is perfect for those working with limited space, yet despite its petite size, it doesn’t compromise on accuracy. Just like an expert barista, it measures out the perfect serving each time.

Its price might be a little steep, and it might not be suited for high-volume reloading, but for those who value ease of use and appreciate a touch of modern tech in their reloading kit, it’s an investment worth considering.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Touchscreen control for ease of use
  • Compact design for smaller workspaces
  • Delivers high accuracy

Cons

  • Higher price point
  • Not the best option for high-volume reloading

Scores: 4.6/5

What customers say

“Excellent product. Easy to use, extremely accurate. After initial calibration, loaded 20 rounds using TR140 powder (identical to Vihtavuori N140) cylindrical grain, biggest variation was 0.1 gr, about 3 times in 50. Double checked the weights with a pocket electronic scale, and saw the occasional 0.1 gr variation between the 2 devices. I believe the Lyman!

Only downside is the cleaning, the powder chute is a bit low to get a container under. Simply fixed by standing the device on a suitable block, or finding a very low container to dump the remains into. Not worth downgrading the 5 stars over this.

I have bought quite a bit of equipment from Hannams, their service is Second to None! Usually next day deliver for me (Leeds to South Wales), 5 days this time, parcel post I suppose, but it still got here in 5 days. I would recommend them to anyone.”

– Stuart Murphy

Best for Precision: RCBS – Chargemaster Lite 120/240vac

It’s built to last, with a sturdy design that promises durability and reliability. Despite its precision, it doesn’t compromise on speed, delivering fast and efficient measurements that streamline your reloading process.

RCBS Scales Chargemaster Lite Powder Measure

Yes, it’s a bit on the pricier side, but for those who won’t settle for anything less than pinpoint precision, it’s a price worth paying.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Unbeatable precision
  • Durable, built-to-last design
  • Fast and efficient
  • User-friendly interface

Cons

  • Very expensive
  • Can be noisy during operation

Scores: 4.7/5

What customers say

“I bought two of these when they were on sale last Christmas. I got them for about $225 a pc I think. Considering what the new 1500’s go for ($400-430) you can almost get two of these for the same price as 1 of the 1500’s. I load will ball and stick powders for long sticks. These scales handle both just fine and, are accurate to within .10 or (1 tenth of a grain). I also have a scale that has an accuracy of .02 or (two 100th’s of a grain) that I trickle to. The RCBS scales are great! They’re fast enough for most reloaders, and when you have two of these you’ll have a hard time keeping up. Outside of spending $800 or more on a scale, these are the best out there in my opinion. I’ve been reloading since 2013 so, 9 years now.”

The RCBS Chargemaster Powder Dispenser / Scale Combo is like a personal assistant, handling the tedious task of measuring and dispensing powder for you. This automated system boasts a robust design that ensures longevity, while its precision is nothing short of impressive.

It’s like having a gourmet chef in your kitchen, perfectly measuring each ingredient to create the perfect dish every time. The speed it offers makes it ideal for high-volume reloading, allowing you to churn out ammunition faster than you can shoot it.

RCBS 98924 Chargemaster Combo Powder Measure

What customers say

“I have a Hornady Lock-n-load powder measure which I use with a case activated powder drop attachment. I wanted another powder measure I could use exclusively for pistol cartridges. I argued with myself for 6 months over whether to buy this Frankford measure as the price was so much lower than Hornady, RCBS, Dillon, etc.”
