Personally, I appreciate a firearm that doesn’t just perform but also looks great doing it, and the DA38’s satin stainless finish nails that effortlessly. American Derringer DA-38 Features

Hammerblock Thumb Safety

The DA-38 from the left.

The DA38’s hammerblock thumb safety, located on the left side of the firearm, is a solid safety feature designed to prevent the hammer from striking the firing pin unless intentionally disengaged. It offers enhanced safety by blocking both the hammer and trigger, a handy addition since the DA38 lacks a traditional trigger guard. Plus, it’s super easy to use, making it quick to engage or disengage when needed. However, it does rely on manual operation, so users need to remember to toggle it during critical moments, and some might find it a bit awkward if it requires a grip adjustment to activate.

Lightweight and Compact

The DA38 shines with its lightweight and compact design, tipping the scales at just 15 ounces and measuring 4.85 inches in length, making it perfect for concealed carry. Its small size easily fits in pockets or compact holsters, and the lightweight build reduces fatigue, making it great for all-day carry. On the flip side, its petite dimensions might pose grip and control challenges for those with larger hands, and the lighter frame can lead to noticeable recoil, which might impact accuracy for some shooters.

Satin Stainless Finish

The DA38’s satin stainless finish is a blend of style and practicality, offering a sleek look while providing solid protection against rust and corrosion, making it durable in various environments. It’s easy to keep looking clean too, as the satin surface resists fingerprints and smudges better than polished finishes. However, its reflective nature might give away your position in certain lighting, which isn’t ideal for stealthy concealed carry. Plus, while tough, the finish can show scratches or wear more noticeably over time if the gun sees heavy use.

High-Strength Stainless Steel Construction

The DA38’s high-strength stainless steel build gives it a rugged durability that can handle regular use without breaking a sweat. This solid construction also keeps safety features like the hammerblock thumb safety running smoothly, even under stress.

Final Thoughts

The American Derringer DA-38 is one of those firearms that just feels like a solid choice for everyday carry. Between its sleek satin stainless finish, lightweight build, and rugged construction, it’s got everything you’d want in a reliable sidearm. I love how easy it is to maintain and how well it balances safety and performance. Sure, it’s not perfect, as the smaller size might be tricky for bigger hands. But honestly, it’s hard not to appreciate what it brings to the table. If you’re looking for a dependable, no-nonsense firearm that’s as good-looking as it is practical, the DA38 might just be your next favorite carry piece. It’s definitely worth checking out!

  1. I own a American Derringer model DA 38/357. It is not a primary selfdefense gun. It is a gun that is best used at very close quarters or defense against a knive attack at close quarters. I purchased it new many years ago and I had to send it back one time 10 or 15 years ago for an ejector problem. You really have to hold on to it tight when shooting 125 grain Remington JHP. I would not pay the MSRP price as listed above in this article for this little gun. NOt because it not good quality but because there are so many better choices out there at those price ranges. I always say any gun that functions the way it is suppose to is still better then a rock. I carry two Bianchi 357 speed strips for reloads and it has worked out very well. The little gun makes a nice hideout gun for those times when STHF incidents. It also a good gun loaded with snake shot out here in the west.
